Sujit Choudhry to Tackle Democratic Decolonization in Hungary and Poland

The Center for Constitutional Transitions’ founding director Sujit Choudhry is among the experts who have come together to help Hungary and Poland recover from what has been described as authoritarian backsliding. It has been reported that the December 2017 roundtable is scheduled to take place at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. The workshop brings together Michael Meyer-Resende, Mattias Kumm, and legal experts from Hungary, Poland, Europe, and the US.

Prior to the roundtable workshop, invited experts have presumed that the two countries can still embrace constitutional democracy. Even though Hungary and Poland are currently experiencing democratic decolonization, they are still tied to the European Union’s economic, legal, and political framework. Many constitutional experts have pointed out that democracy is undergoing difficult moments in different countries of the world. They, therefore, believe that lessons from outside the European Union would be handy in dealing with Hungary and Poland’s case.

The workshop aims establish reasons behind authoritarian backsliding in the two countries. The invited experts hope to draw a formulated recovery path based on previous experiences within and outside EU. They also intend to create a network of legal experts from various parts of the globe in order to offer a solid solution to the concerns. The roundtable hopes to come up tools and proposals that will be of benefit to various parties, and institutions. Additional article on
